The Gallows Pole review — this is grim, funny England (in the 18th century)

If you skipped The Gallows Pole because you saw the listing and thought: “Nah, I’m not in the mood for a grim-sounding 18th-century costume drama” (my instinct was similar) then I urge you to reconsider. Because it is riotously entertaining and upends most of what you expect from a period drama, tosses it in the air and refashions it as something entirely distinctive.
