Malls reopen, shoppers return for last-minute shopping during Raya

PETALING JAYA: Several shopping malls in the city saw the return of shoppers on the first day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri following their temporary closures after being flagged through the Hotspot Identification for Dynamic Engagement (HIDE) last week. Sunway Malls and Theme Parks chief executive officer HC Chan described the return of shoppers as an encouraging sign as there are still those who wanted to do last-minute shopping during the festive period. However, he said shoppers were more “careful and cautious” under the present situation and complied strictly with standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure safety.

Spotlight on HIDE system

On Facebook, there were Malaysians who were supportive of the move. In fact, Prabha Sundram said it should have been done long ago. “Lives are at stake here, ” she said. Similarly, Azid Barja said it was better to avoid malls, bazaars and other crowded places for now. “(We should) act like it is the first MCO. Only the head of the household goes out for groceries. People should stay home whenever possible. Also, never take off your face mask when outside, ” he said. Sunway Malls and Theme Parks chief executive officer HC Chan said they were doing their best to cooperate and support all the government standard operating procedures (SOP) as they believed that “safety is the responsibility of everyone”.

Christmas cheer-ing up in the pandemic

EVEN Covid-19 cannot stop the Christmas splendour in our shopping centres this year. Malls are not only decked with sparkly decorations, but many included special elements to lift the spirits of shoppers during such difficult times. Some malls in the Klang Valley wanted to give shoppers a treat by recreating the wintry Christmas ambience in Western countries – to make up for the travel ban this year. Others have meaningful messages behind the festive facade to remind Malaysians to keep looking on the bright side, even as the movement control order (MCO) continues. One big difference this year, though – some malls will not be having performances to avoid crowds for public health and safety.
