Despite the severe drought in Karnataka, the state s chief minister, Siddaramaiah, has assured that it will not affect the grandeur of the Mysuru Dasara celebrations. The festival, which represents Karnataka s culture and heritage, will go on as planned. The government had previously cancelled the Hampi festival due to the drought, which drew criticism from the opposition BJP. The Dasara celebrations, a tradition since the 15th century, include the famous Mysore Palace being adorned with thousands of lights and an elephant procession carrying the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari.
