With jury trials set to resume May 10, an Orange County federal judge has softened his stance and is allowing a delay he previously rejected as unconstitutional.
U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney said the “dramatically changed” circumstances in the Central District of California quash any Constitutional concerns about a request from prosecutors to delay a trial for a month.

Ronald Ware spent five months in a Santa Ana jail awaiting trial after his arrest in Brea last summer on a federal gun charge.
His day in court never came. U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney dismissed the case in January, saying emergency rules that shut down federal jury trials during the pandemic had denied Ware his right to a speedy trial.
“Nowhere in the Constitution is there an exception for times of emergency or crisis,” Carney wrote in the ruling that set Ware free.
Carney has tossed criminal charges against a jewelry-store robbery suspect and three others for the same reason. The decision to shut down all jury trials, he found, was excessive.
The equipment has been donated by the De Vere Beaumont Estate hotel in Old Windsor. The donation aims to bring timely relief to parents struggling to teach their children at home while schools are closed. Helping parents educate children at home is a new challenge for Learning to Work which in the past has concentrated on getting young people into work though arranging placements or meetings with potential employers. Rachael Burt, CEO of Learning to Work said: “This fantastic donation will make a massive difference to 15 families from the local area. Having access to a laptop makes the home learning experience so much more impactful for young people and relieves pressure for parents and carers.”
