On June 28, 2005, in one of the bloodiest days in the history of the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and the Navy SEALs, SEAL LT Michael Murphy performed heroic actions to save his men at the cost of his life. His conduct resulted in being posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
Murphy was killed in action while taking part in a kill or capture mission in Afghanistan during Operation Red Wings. He was a member of SEAL Delivery Team Vehicle Team ONE as the commander of Alpha Platoon and had deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Every Memorial Day, fitness enthusiasts and newcomers around the country and across the globe prepare to honor fallen Navy SEAL Michael P. Murphy and many others who have made the ultimate sacrifice by completing “The Murph Challenge.” The grueling workout consists of a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another one-mile run.
Murphy originally dubbed the workout “Body Armor” as he executed the routine with a 20-pound protective vest. He developed the workout as a functional routine that was practical for his work as a SEAL. While his average time was between 32 and 34 minutes, his best time was reportedly just over 28 minutes. The workout would prove invaluable in the treacherous mountains of Afghanistan.

“I graduated from medical school on May 11, 2005,” he says. And that’s when things got hot. He was on a plane to Afghanistan two days later. “Then on June 28, we got the call that the Chinook [helicopter] had been shot down and a Navy SEAL team was missing.”
Operation Red Wings went as tragically as a mission can. Early on the morning of the 28th, the military dropped four SEALs Lieutenant Michael Murphy and Petty Officers Danny Dietz, Matthew Axelson, and Marcus Luttrell about 10,000 feet high in the Hindu Kush Mountains. The team was to provide reconnaissance for an impending action against guerrilla leader Ahmad Shah.

Though Berg s source material isn t the New Testament, he often handles Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell s account (via ghostwriter Patrick Robinson) of his doomed 2005 reconnaissance mission with the thunderous reverence Mel Gibson brought to Christ s crucifixion and resurrection.
