2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines support dietary supplement use © Suwaree Tangbovornpichet / Getty Images The dietary guidelines  – released by USDA and HHS Tuesday Dec 29 – acknowledge that many adults in the US take one or more dietary supplements, which often include some nutrients that are “under-consumed among older adults, including calcium and vitamins D and B12”. Supplements of vitamins D and B12 receive numerous mentions in the 164-page document, most notably for mothers and infants, and also for older Americans. The guidelines call for vitamin D supplements for infants to start soon after birth. This is the first time the guidelines have included dietary recommendations for infants from birth through 24 months.

NPA urges FDA to stem tide of counterfeit products, move forward on CBD

NPA urges FDA to stem tide of counterfeit products, move forward on CBD ©Getty Images - YayaErnst Federal regulators could do more to protect consumers by using existing import authorities as well as moving forward on hemp/CBD regulation, the National Products Association has said. NPA sent a letter to new members of Congress this week asking that they consider joining the Dietary Supplements Caucus. Part of the letter addressed what the organization believes to be the most pressing concerns, that being the continuing limbo of CBD regulations as well as the potentially fraudulent products coming in from overseas. “We recognize the historical challenges policymakers are facing during the pandemic. However, the COVID-19 crisis should not preclude the FDA from executing its important responsibilities in other areas,” said Daniel Fabricant, PhD, NPA’s president and CEO.
