Phoenix Catholics hold Stations of the Cross ritual to honor homeless

Catholic leaders carrying a 7-foot cross led dozens of people committed to helping Phoenix s homeless community on a 2-mile trek through downtown Friday night in a nontraditional version of an Easter season ritual.  The unique take on the Stations of the Cross allowed participants to reflect both on the suffering of Jesus Christ leading up to his death and the daily suffering of those in Arizona without homes.  Our (homeless) guests carry their cross on a regular basis. Every dang day they re carrying their own personal crosses, the Rev. Dan Ponisciak said.  On Fridays during Lent, Christians typically pray at 14 stations marked by paintings or sculptures depicting the events leading to Christ s death, beginning with Pontius Pilate condemning Christ to death and ending with the burial of his body.

City Council Approves More Shelter Beds On Human Services Campus

Reply Feb. 7, 2021 At its meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 3, the Phoenix City Council voted to approve a zoning request change allowing additional shelter beds on the Human Services Campus (HSC) for individuals experiencing homelessness, but rejected a 100-bed low-barrier shelter at Andre House. Council members also discussed allocating additional funding to address homelessness and to move forward on the city s proposed Homeless Strategies Plan calling for regional distribution of homeless shelters and resources. Subscribe After hearing presentations and community input lasting more than four hours, the Council voted to allow an additional 275 beds at Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) and 200 emergency beds for use during extreme weather. The application originally filed in January 2019 asked for approval for the low-barrier shelter in a to-be-renovated building adjacent to Andre House, which was to be operated by Community Bridges, Inc.

Human Services Campus Files Appeal To Add More Shelter Beds

Reply Jan. 16, 2021 The Human Services Campus (HSC) has filed an appeal to last week s City of Phoenix Planning Commission vote on adding shelter beds which included 15 commission-developed and approved stipulations that, among other directives, removed a proposed 100-bed low-barrier shelter to be developed by Andre House and put a three-year sunset on an additional 275 beds at Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS). Subscribe While we were grateful for the vote in favor of adding shelter beds, the added stipulations, which basically conflict with Phoenix city-staff approved stipulations and which were passed without any input or comment from the Human Services Campus, CASS or Andre House, are unacceptable, said HSC Executive Director Amy Schwabenlender. The stipulations severely hamper our ability to help people experiencing homelessness, hundreds of whom are unsheltered and living on and around the campus.
