Author and philanthropist Mackenzie Scott donated $5 million to the nonprofit.
Goodwill Northern Michigan helps fight homelessness and food insecurity in our communities.
They say this gift gives them hope about the difference they’ll make in 2021.
“Really it’s overwhelming it’s really just an opportunity to really take a step back and be really thankful especially during this time. We’ve had a rough year in our country and this is really something that’s really hopeful as we go forward into 2021 really making a difference,” said Dan Buron, Executive Director.
In total, Scott has donated more than $4 billion to organizations throughout the country.

Goodwill Northern Michigan was selected as a $5 million gift recipient by MacKenzie Scott. The local nonprofit is among 384 organizations nationwide that are receiving unsolicited major gifts.
Goodwill Northern Michigan is pleased to announce a one-time, unrestricted $5 million gift from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. In the last four months, Scott has given unexpected gifts totaling $4.2 billion to 384 organizations across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington DC. In a Medium post about her gift, she explained the rigorous “data-driven approach to identifying organizations with strong leadership teams and results” used in selecting Goodwill Northern Michigan and 383 others from a pool of 6,490 candidates. Goodwill Northern Michigan is privileged to be included in this select group of organizations working to alleviate suffering for those hardest hit by the pandemic.

TRAVERSE CITY â A northern Michigan charity will be the beneficiary of one of the wealthiest women in the world s pledge to donate the majority of her fortune during her lifetime.
Philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott selected Goodwill Northern Michigan to receive an unsolicited, unrestricted, one-time gift of $5 million. The funds will play a pivotal role in the nonprofit s future work in food insecurity and goal to make area homelessness a rare, brief, and one-time experience,  Goodwill Northern Michigan Executive Director Dan Buron said in a Wednesday morning press statement. This gift is a great opportunity for northern Michigan, and a great responsibility for our organization.

Every morning, a small fleet of Food Rescue trucks makes the rounds to dozens of stores, farms and bakeries. Their mission? To rescue soon-to-expire, fresh and nutritious foods as part of Goodwill Northern Michigan’s Food Rescue program dedicated to not just helping feed people in need in northwest Michigan, but also doing so with healthy food.
The food everything from prepared dishes to fresh produce is delivered on the same day, free of charge, to more than 70 food pantries and community meal sites in Grand Traverse, Antrim, Benzie, Kalkaska, and Leelanau counties, where people can access the food for free. About 18,000 residents in the five counties an area twice the size of Rhode Island benefit from Goodwill Northern Michigan’s Food Rescue program each year.
