South Dakota Places Top Ten In National Rodeo Competition

  South Dakota has one of the top-10 high school rodeo teams in the country. The National High School Rodeo Finals recently concluded in Lincoln, Nebraska.     In addition to South Dakota’s overall 10th-place showing, the boys’ team placed seventh and the girls’ team placed 22nd.      South Dakota’s top individual finisher Talon Elshere, placed second in saddle-bronc riding.    “When I got off and heard my score and I was a little disappointed when I heard I was sitting second, but I would have liked to win it for sure but it was a lot better than I did last year so I’ll take it,” he said.

South Dakota high school rodeo club's annual 'slave auction' canceled

USA TODAY Local activists are calling for racial equity training for a South Dakota school district after its high school’s rodeo club canceled a slave auction” fundraiser amid social media backlash. “Ignorance is one thing, but straight-up blatant racism when you know the history of racism in our state is another,” said Julian Beaudion, a Black police officer who is part of the South Dakota Coalition for Justice and Equity and interim director of the South Dakota African American History Museum. “I don’t think there’s any excuse for what they did.” For years, Faith High School s rodeo club members offered their labor for a set amount of time to bidders in exchange for donations at an annual fundraiser. The Washington Post reported that the Rodeo Club s adult adviser called the event space to cancel the event. This year’s auction in Faith, South Dakota, was scheduled for Monday.

South Dakota High School Rodeo Club Cancels Slave Auction Amid Outrage KEY POINTS Slave Auctions  have existed in South Dakota for over a decade  Club members are auctioned off to serve the highest bidder A rodeo club in Faith, South Dakota, canceled its Slave/Branding Auction,  a fundraising event, following a social media backlash over its name, which was described as racist and derogatory. The Faith High School Rodeo Club had initially planned the annual event, which included a pancake supper and a pie auction, for April 26 at Legion Hall in Faith, the Argus Leader reported. Slave Auctions have existed in several communities in South Dakota for over a decade. The concept is that the club members are auctioned off to serve/do chores for the highest bidders in exchange for a donation.
