let s try something, picture people who violently broke into the u.s. capitol on january 6th. are you picturing any women? new reporting from nbc news shows the state of extremism in america is changing. this piece is just now hitting nbc news.com and our app. let me read you a quote. between 1948 and 2018, just 6% of violent and non-violent far-right extremists in the u.s. were women but that percentage more than doubled on january 6th. to date women reflect 13% of the federal arrests, end quote. we are happy to welcome in a woman who wrote that piece, nbc opinion columnist and offer of hate in the heartland. cynthia miller idris, and extremism expert joan harmon. cynthia, let s begin with you, when you started to look into this trend what surprised you the most about it? well, good morning, good to

reducing the fertile ground in which anti-democratic and violent extremist ideologies thrive. it needs a public health approach to preventing violent extremism. what does that look like to you, cynthia? great question. i mean, you know, what we saw on january 6th, i think, is a perfect example of this. again, only about 16% of those arrested had any kind of affiliation or formal tie to an extremist group. so for the vast majority of these people, they were relatively spontaneously moved to violence. they thought they were the heroic actors of democracy. so they went down the rabbit hole of propaganda. we can t combat that problem by focusing on the traditional tools of extremism, which include counterextremism tools like surveillance or infill administration or getting
of the 20, 15 on their face are nonviolent. they involve things like insults. they involve a nazi salute. that s one of the examples. my god, a parent did a nazi salute at a school board because they thought the policies were oppressive. general garland, is doing a nazi suit at an elected official, is that protected by the first amendment? yes, it is. joining me now is california congressman eric swalwell. he was an impeachment manager early this year, and cynthia idris, professor at the school of education at american university and the author of hate in the homeland: the new global far right. representative swalwell, your thoughts on head cruz defending the nazi salute. he later said well, he was just defending parents rights. your thoughts. imagine wanting to own the libs so bad that you would
