Naval patrols conducted in northwestern and western waters of the island on 07
th May 2021, led to the seizure of over 235kg of Kerala cannabis and about 522kg of onion seeds, attempted to be smuggled into the country via sea routes.
The Navy is stepping up patrols to curb the smuggling activities via sea routes as well as to prevent the risk of the transmission of the pandemic within the country, as a result of smuggling activities and possible illegal immigration attempts towards Sri Lanka. Incidentally, the Navy is on a 24-hour patrol increasing the security in island waters, including the northern and northwestern seas which are most likely areas for smuggling and illegal immigration.

The rift between the Kerala government and the central probe agencies is taking a fresh turn with state chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan levelling fresh charges against the Customs department.
CM Vijayan alleged that the Customs has threatened state government officials, and forced them to give statements in a specific manner . The Customs along with the Enforcement Directorate and the National Investigation Agency have been probing the infamous gold smuggling case and other associated irregularities. State assistant protocol officer Harikrishnan was summoned by the Customs Department under Section 108 of the Customs Act, and he appeared before the Customs Preventive Office, Ernakulam, on January 5, 2021. Colombo (News 1st); A special operation carried out by the Navy on 08th January 2021 in the northwestern seas of the island resulted in the seizure of about 8769kg of dried turmeric, attempted to be smuggled into the island and apprehension of 12 Indian nationals.
Meanwhile, the seized consignment of turmeric along with Indian nationals was brought ashore on 09
th January for onward investigations.
Having spotted 02 suspicious Indian dhows in Sri Lankan waters off Kudiramalei Point in dark hours on 08th January, the Northwestern Naval Command carried out this special operation and intercepted the suspicious dhows.
