Mondi reports stable first-quarter performance

Paper and packaging company Mondi says its underlying earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) of €351-million for the first quarter of this year were broadly flat when compared with its Ebitda for the fourth quarter of 2022, after excluding a noncash forestry fair value gain. “The quarter was characterised by lower average selling prices; softer demand, driven in part by destocking; and lower input costs from the highs seen in the second half of 2022. While wood prices remained high in the first quarter of this year, they have now started to reduce,” the company notes in a trading update.

Qatar Airways formally opens its first cargo hub outside its homeland – in Africa

Qatar Airways Cargo, a business of major Middle Eastern carrier Qatar Airways, on Wednesday formally inaugurated its first cargo hub outside its home country, at Kigali International Airport, in Rwanda. The formality was marked by the arrival at Kigali of a Qatar Airways Cargo Boeing 777F dedicated freighter aircraft. Qatar Airways Cargo already operates intra-African cargo flights, between Kigali and Lagos, three times a week. It also already operates a once-a-week service from Istanbul, Turkey, via Doha, to Kigali. Both these services are operated with an Airbus A310. The new Doha-Kigali service, using the 777F, will operate twice a week. The carrier said that new routes from Kigali will soon be announced.

Organisations vindicated in battle for development of an Integrated Energy Plan

Environmental organisations the Southern African Faith Communities' Environment Institute (Safcei) and The Green Connection (TGC) say they have been vindicated to some extent, after struggling for more than two years to get Section 6 of the National Energy Act (NEA) into operation. President Cyril Ramaphosa on April 28 gazetted the decision to bring Section 6 of the NEA into operation, effective April 1, 2024, following legal proceedings launched by the environmental organisations in January to review government’s failure or refusal to bring Section 6 into operation.
