Japanese textile designer Sudō Reiko's innovative materials subject of new exhibition

May 4, 2021 2:54 pm “My designs often start from little everyday moments, where I’ll think ‘Hmm, that’s interesting, how would this work as a textile?’,” says designer Sudō Reiko. Most of her ideas are born out of what she calls “a sense of wonder toward ordinary occurrences”. This way of thinking is how and why she strives to blend her traditional Japanese culture and practices with cutting edge technology, producing innovative materials in the process. As London’s Japan House prepares to open an exhibition exploring Sudō’s life and work, we speak with her about what visitors can expect from the show and how her career has developed.

Investigation after important feature of historic Keighley mill is destroyed

AN investigation has begun after an important part of a historically significant mill site was destroyed. Low Mill on Gresley Road in Keighley, dates back to 1779, was the first cotton mill to be built in Yorkshire and is one of just two Grade II listed buildings in the town. The mill was powered by water diverted from the River Worth through a series of sluices a goit. But the building has been derelict for decades, and last year it was added to Save Britain’s Heritage’s “At Risk” register of historic and heritage buildings that face an uncertain future.

Investigation after part of historic Keighley mill is destroyed

Workshop planned for site in front of 'at risk' listed Keighley mill | Bradford Telegraph and Argus

AN application to build a steel fabricating workshop next to one of the District’s most “at risk” historic mills has been submitted to Bradford Council. Grade II listed Low Mill in Keighley was the first cotton mill in Yorkshire, but today is in a sorry state. Just last month the building was added to Save Britain’s Heritage’s “At Risk” register of historic and heritage buildings that face an uncertain future. And Historic England has listed the building’s condition as being “very bad.” Now a planning application to build on a plot of land next to the mill has been submitted, although it says that “unfortunately” the plans do not include the refurbishment of the mill building, on Gresley Road, a short distance from Keighley Rail Station.
