[applause] captain jerry yellin is an Army Air Force veteran who served in world war ii between 1941 and 1945. He enlisted on his 18th birthday just two months after the bombing of pearl harbor. After graduating from loup Army Airfield as an island in 1943, thats a right old age of, he spent the remainder of the war flying c 47s and p 51 combat missions in the pacific with the 78 fighter squadron. He participated in the first landbased fighter mission over japan on april 7, 1945. And as the unique distinction of having flown a final combat mission of world war ii on august 14, 1945. Originally commandants house. ,here at fort adams, in newport. Join us as we learn more about this historic home. So the Eisenhower House we are in today was used as a summer white house during 1958 and 1960. He came in the summer of 1957 and stayed in the naval war college. He found that living on the war college was not exactly what he was looking for, study took a little tour of the town. He saw this house which was at that point used as the commandants quarters and decided this would make a fine summer white house. So he was here for two summers, usually late summer. So late august into the middle to late part of september was primarily the two years he was here. The summer of 1957 was the integration of Central High School in little rock, arkansas. Which was a very big, politically charged event he did deal with while here in newport. He was famously said the white house was essentially wherever he is.
