W&B Edge Out Shanklin In Six-Goal Thriller To Go Top
By Jamie White
Whitecroft and Barton (W&B) have gone top of the Isle of Wight Saturday Football Division 1, after beating title rivals, Shanklin.
In front of a crowd of around 200 people at the County Ground, the visitors got off to the perfect start, taking the lead inside the first ten minutes.
An out-swinging corner was flicked on for Matt Evans to nod the ball in from inside the six-yard box.
Featuring several Wessex League players, the away side doubled their lead just moments later when centre back, Marty McDonough, headed home after a flick on from a free kick. McDonough - captain of Newport FC - is one of a number of players who signed for Island Saturday league teams when the Wessex League was cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions.
Covid-19 restrictions have forced an early end to the season, it has been confirmed. The Island League is now poised to make an announcement, after a statement last night about the Wessex League. Cowes play in the Premier Division of the Sydenham s Wessex League. East Cowes Vics and Newport and have been without games for several months, as the Covid-19 pandemic led to cancellation of all sport, including Island football. In brighter news, for Island League clubs, the Saturday League is set to announce a restart, pending FA guidance and a vote on options on where the season goes from here.

IT IS a natural progression for a number of Island footballers to go into coaching, then eventually management, but not many have matched the achievements of Newport boss Steve Brougham. Island-born Steve, 57, joined Andy Sampson’s dugout team at the start of the season, but found himself in the hotseat in November after Andy decided to step down inheriting a decent, young, talented squad pushing for promotion in Division 1 of the Sydenhams Wessex League.

The Island s three Wessex League clubs await a decision by the FA on whether the season will go ahead at some stage, or be scrapped, like last season. THE Isle of Wight’s three Sydenhams Wessex League clubs are bracing themselves for what could be a second successive halt to a season because of the pandemic. More than six weeks ago, on Christmas Day, the Island was a Tier One area one deemed to be among the safest in the country, with football watched by improved crowds at Cowes Sports, and for East Cowes Vics and Newport games at Beatrice Avenue.
