France opens investigation into allegations that ministers dined at secret restaurants

FRENCH authorities have opened an investigation into accusations that government ministers have been breaching Covid rules to dine in clandestine restaurants. Restaurants in France have been closed since October and the country has just entered a renewed lockdown, with schools being shuttered as coronavirus infections threaten to overwhelm the healthcare system. A whistleblower anonymously told a French documentary broadcast over the Easter weekend that he had dined with “a certain number of ministers” at secret eateries. The claim has inflamed public anger at the government, whose approval ratings have been hit its poor handling of the pandemic – almost 100,000 people have died of coronavirus in France. Opinion polls show far-right leader Marine Le Pen neck and neck with President Emmanuel Macron, whose crackdown on alleged Muslim “separatism” is widely seen as a bid to outflank Ms Le Pen on the right.
