epstein s bail. the prosecution continues to make the case that he is a flight risk. do things like this make any difference to what we heard today? i think in terms of courtney wild i think her presence in the courtroom yesterday was interesting and may make a difference. she actually testified. and while it is not when she was testifying was epstein in the courtroom? yes, yes. she was face to face with him for the first time, which is an incredible, emotional dynamic as you can imagine. right, yes. but also it s unique she was there testifying. it was a bail hearing. and although there is precedent for that, it s pretty unusual. and what legal experts say is that it s an indication that new york authorities that prosecutors as well as the judge in this case, making sure they move slowly, deliberately, and specifically making sure that accusers like courtney wild have a chance to be a part of this process and to have their stories heard early on. stephanie, thank you f
there are any accusers here, i d stepped forward and had their say. they didn t go into great detail about the nature of the alleged crimes, but they did say, as you noted, that he s a dangerous man and they would be very uncomfortable if he were allowed to go free on bail. they stood just three or four feet away from mr. epstein when they were doing the talking, and at one point as as courtney wild spoke mr. epstein was noticed shaking his head in the negative. yeah. let me play just a little bit of the very famed attorney, very renowned attorney who represents three of epstein s accusers. he talked about about that testimony and how courageous it was. take a listen. the most powerful testimony was not from any of the lawyers in there, it was from these two
senior editor of investigations at the miami herald. you were in court today. can you give us a little of the other color that went on? i was not in court today, our reporter julie brown was in court today, but it was very interesting. remember that these accusers never had the chance to face mr. epstein in court. well, today they did. and i think the judge surprised the courtroom when he said if there are any accusers here, i d like to give them the opportunity to say something, and these two young women, annie farmer and courtney wild, stepped forward and had their say. they didn t go into great detail about the nature of the alleged crimes, but they did say, as you noted, that he s a dangerous man and they would be very uncomfortable if he were allowed to go free on bail. they stood just three or four feet away from mr. epstein when they were doing the talking, and at one point as as courtney
statements. slightly trembling, but it was a really extraordinary moment. it s a landmark in this story of how the culture has turned. in a courtroom like this, the defendant is sitting there and usually has his back to you for the entire proceeding, it s hard to read a reaction from the defendant from where the press is sitting, but what could you get from jeffrey epstein, especially when the girls, who are now women, were on the witness stand? courtney wild s lawyer said he went up with courtney wild as she spoke. he could see jeffrey epstein. he told me that jeffrey epstein s face did not move. he stayed fixed on the judge. i could see him as you say from behind, bolt upright, shaven in the blue prison uniform. he was putting on the show of his life. he put it on, i have to say,
epstein s alleged accusers say that maxwell was involved in recruiting them and in some cases grooming them to be victims of this, and so i think the big question here is which of these is true or is both? well, if they re both true, how did the latter go unnoticed for so long. you ve got epstein s victims who have sued max well, and she settled with them, and at the same time she s the toast of the city who, you know, attending chelsea clinton s wedding after much of this came out? you re right, all of those cases were settled and it is, you know, relevant to say that she s never been criminally charged. kwo you know, what i think you re asking about is how the new york social scene could put stuff like that out of mind, and i think the answer as one socialite told me, it s just not done to ask. this woman told me half of my friends, i don t know what they do, and you know, essentially. you don t know if your dear friend recruits underaged women
