A by-appointment advent labyrinth, take-home advent wreathes and Zoom services will feature prominently this Christmas as local churches adapt to yet another COVID-19 holiday.
âParticularly for Christmas, itâs so steeped in tradition for so many people that itâs important to keep a lot of that tradition as much as possible in place,â Father Nic Mather of St. Stephenâs Episcopal Church said.
He and other local church leaders have focused on creating engaging virtual services that still feel like Christmas.
United Methodist Pastor Allison Mattocks created advent-to-go bags with a wreath and tea lights for her Longview congregation and advent wreaths with fresh greenery and long tapers for her Rainier congregation. Both groups also got a devotional calendar and a letter from her.

Like a sapling left standing after a clearcut, the public lands of Southwest Washington are slowly growing one ring at a time.
Recently, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed that 6,557 acres of Weyerhaeuser timberlands have been opened to the public through their private lands access program.
Those acres are located primarily in the Cascade foothills south of Mount St. Helens and on the east side of Interstate 5. One of the four parcels is located just southeast of Yale Reservoir along the Clark/Skamania county line. Other parcels are located in Game Management Units 568 (Washougal), 572 (Siouxon), and 568 (South Clark County). In those areas, access permits will no longer be required for visitors but the use of motorized vehicles is still prohibited.

The Longview City Council approved a temporary business and occupation tax relief for small businesses and approved about $2.9 million in amendments to the 2019-2020 budget Thursday.
The council also rejected a motion to update property maintenance codes because councilmembers said it was not enforced equally, especially at the Alabama Street camp the city set up as a temporary housing site for homeless people.
Mayor Pro Tem Mike Wallin said he was against the state-mandated updates because âunequal enforcement of our code on those who are able to payâ and added that âpublic health officers and the like turn the other way for a special class and a special group in special places, which is not a fair and equitable application of the law.â
