colorado, this morning after a mass shooting at a batman movie premiere. so far, 12 dead. and 38 injured. as a community searching for answers. a special edition of cnn newsroom starts right now. hello, everyone. i m in for carol costello. we welcome viewers from around the world watching on cnn international. a night at the movies turned into a night of terror for moviegoers in colorado after a gunman opens up a rampage. and here is the latest of what we know. gunshots erupted just outside of denver in an aurora, colorado, theater during an early morning screening of the dark knight rises. that is the new batman movie. 12 people are dead, 28 more wounded. a 3-month-old baby is among the wounded. police have a suspect in custody, a young man. a witness saw that man burst into the theater. somebody kicked in the emergency exit and started throwing gas grenade sais and started shooting people at random. was it movie theater number nine? number nine, which is the one
from american express listing him as the benefactor. so what type of red flag is that putting up? especially when a policy like this even exists in the first place. it is a big red flag, and it s something of course investigators are looking into. it doesn t say that he s guilty. again, i m not saying that at all. but what i m saying neither am i. okay. right. it is odd, definitely. and nowadays you can get an insurance policy for anything. but it s i think the question at hand is that when you have to go in and actually use it, you have to prove certain things. so i think that those things have to be proven before anything could actually be cashed out or cashed in for that matter. but it s definitely it s an odd twist to this investigation. as the case moves on, detectives have also reportedly seized in materials from giordano s home in maryland, including a cell phone. as i understand it, that contains some questionable images. so what do you know more about these pictu
to him. and as we now know, he took a cab and that explains the presence of that second man who was in the safeway with him. of course investigators are trying to make progress putting together a time line and a profile of this individual. they, like us, are looking, of course, at everything online. you can be sure they seized a computer, because this individual did post on youtube and myspace and so forth. they ll be looking at the e-mails he sent, who he was communicating with, whether there are any connections that might be relevant to the shootings, probably also there was a cell phone, there usually are in cases of this type. they ll be looking at who he was talking to. so it s a broad far-ranging investigation at this point in time. at this point i don t think anybody would tell you that they ve unlocked the puzzle totally but bits and pieces are falling into place. thank you very much. i m glad you mention the computer and social media because we re going to be talking to the
inquired about what they are racing towards, it wasn t the transformer but someone in their car and crashed. when emergency vehicles responded, that person died. one of orlando s fatalities according to the fire chief here and a storm related. of course investigators couldn t really investigate that because of terrible conditions. but just goes to show to you doesn t take much for the storm to be super dangerous. and even with orlando being in the center of the state with people on both coasts coming to evacuate, we re certainly seeing conditions be pretty difficult. i also want to mention here in orlando at the convention center, housing thousands of emergency vehicles ready to respond all across the state and vehicles coming across the country and but it will take a while for the storm to die down before they can get to anywhere and see where the damage was
france. police shot and killed a man who grabbed a soldier s weapon. it s being called an attempted act of terror. keir simmons joins us live from paris. let s start with what exactly happened and where the situation stands right now. reporter: yeah, the airport, as you mentioned, is still evacuated. what appears to have happened is this man grabbed the gun of a female soldier. there were then reports, unconfirmed, of a hostage taking. ultimately, though, this attacker was shot and killed. another incident north of paris where a police officer was shot and injured. nbc news told by french judicial sources that the same man is suspected in both cases. he does appear to be known to police, ayman, with a criminal record. whether that extends to him being on a kind of terror list, if you like, is still unclear, but of course investigators will be trying to establish what his motivation might be and whether he has links to terrorist groups. keir, i know that we re about
