The France announced Saturday the suspension of "all its development aid and budget support actions" in Niger. Paris "demands the return without delay to the Nigerien constitutional order, around President Bazoum," the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. The France, which ended the Barkhane counterterrorism operation and withdrew from Mali under pressure from the Bamako junta, currently has 1,500 troops deployed in Niger who have previously operated jointly with Nigerien army. The coup in Niamey is the third in this area since 2020, after the military came to power in Mali and Burkina Faso.
