At least 1 dead after a large and dangerous tornado rips through Birmingham area
A tornado described as “large and extremely dangerous” by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, Alabama, left at least one person dead, others with serious injuries and caused significant damage throughout Jefferson County and surrounding areas Monday night, including ripping through a hotel and tearing off part of the roof of a church.
Injuries ranging from minor to serious have been reported with victims transported to area hospitals, Jim Coker Director of Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) told CNN. He did not say how many people were injured.

JEFFERSON CO., Ala. (WBRC) - Early Tuesday morning Jefferson County EMA leaders asked everyone to PLEASE stay out of Fultondale as crews working to survey and move debris out of the area.
Jeffco EMA tweeted: PLEASE stay out of the Fultondale area. This includes but isn’t limited to Carson Road, Black Creek Road, Pine Hill Road, and New Castle Road. On top of road dangers such as power lines and debris.traffic is clogging the roads. Once again, PLEASE stay out of the area.

The twister also ripped a hotel apart and tore off part of a church s roof.
About 30 people in Fultondale were injured, the city s fire chief said on Tuesday. Seventeen patients were tak(en) to the ER, with various injuries and some critical, Fire Chief Justin McKenzie said.
At least 11 people were treated on the scene.
A young man, possibly a teen, was killed when he was trapped in the basement of his home, Fultondale Police Chief D.P. Smith said, according to AL.com.
Emergency crews continue to remove debris and conduct additional search and rescue efforts after a tornado ripped through a suburban area north of Birmingham, Ala., leaving at least one dead and dozens more injured.
Survey crews assessing the storm damage found that preliminary estimates indicate the tornado was at least a high-end EF-2 tornado, with winds up to 135 miles per hour, the National Weather Service in Birmingham said Tuesday afternoon.
Hours earlier NWS Birmingham described the tornado as “large, extremely dangerous and potentially deadly” in an alert just before 11 p.m. Monday.
Photos and video posted to social media show just how widespread the damage is: once-wooded areas along streets were nearly entirely razed, leaving behind jagged trees, twisted metal and homes damaged to the point of being uninhabitable.

A tornado killed one person and left several people critically injured in Alabama, US media said Tuesday.
The storm, which hit the town of Fultondale in Jefferson County late Monday, caused significant damage, the National Weather Service (NWS) tweeted.
One person has died and at least five people have been hospitalized with critical injuries, Fultondale Police Chief D.P. Smith told local news media AL.com. It looks like a bomb went off, local pastor s son Sam Moerbe, 18, told the outlet.
Smith said he understood that the individual died after a tree collapsed on their home as they sheltered in the basement.
