The challenge of finding adequate staff for employers is nothing new in the Florida Keys, but some are reporting that the issue could be worse than ever now.
The economic upheaval caused by the pandemic caused many Americans, mostly those who make their living in low-paying service jobs, to the brink of financial desperation. Given the extremely high cost of living in the Keys, this caused many to pack up and seek refuge in more affordable areas, according to multiple sources.
Daniel Samess, CEO of the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce, said the current lack of workforce is âprobably the worst Iâve seen in my 15-plus years as head of the chamberâ and that the problem is equal to or worse than the shortage after Hurricane Irma damaged much of the Keys in 2017.
The Monroe County Commission has laid the groundwork to set up community taxing districts to pay for expensive neighborhood sea level rise mitigation projects throughout the unincorporated areas of the Florida Keys.
The commission on Wednesday did not set an exact fee or location for each district but only approved the ability to levy a property tax âfor road elevation and improvement projects to be constructed due to the sea level rise and flood mitigation program and authorizing the creation of assessment areas in the future,â the ordinance read.
Several Key Largo residents voiced concerns about how much the county may levy in the future to pay for such projects. Stillwright Point residents are concerned that they would have to pay as much $5,000 a year for 30 years to fund road elevation and flooding projects in their neighborhood, as some estimates have the projects costing $21 million.
