Make tougher laws, and thats not me. We dont we this is such an epidemic and we cannot arrest a way out of this mess. I think the president touched on it briefly. [applause] what the president said earlier is true. We want to arrest the violent, drug dealers that are creating havoc in our communities. We have share of violent crime, and we are very fortunate we have a great partnership, they fund so many of our efforts and so on a daily basis the bad guy gets arrested. So we feel Law Enforcement as im sure our counterparts do, we really attack the supply side of this issue very well and so we are not going to back down from that and keep trying to remove people that are dangerous from society. But whats nice about this and what i want to talk about though, the attacking as a strategy on the demand side and thats what i think is very nice about the panel and this gathering, because weve got a lot of things we can really talk about. We basically have a community of zonbies, for lack of a
States has allocated more than 4. 5 billion to meet syrian humanitarian needs. This includes over 1. 5 billion to ngos, the International Federation of red cross and red crescent and other International Organizations. Yet according to unhcr chronic funding shortages are greatly limiting aid. Since 2011 the u. N. Appeals have remained significantly underfunded and recently resulted to cuts in food aid and cash assistance. Lack of supplies is leading to begging, child labor, survival sex and increased debt. The world can and must do better. Its imperative when we talk to our allies particularly in the gulf countries that we emphasize the necessity of meeting the humanitarian need of these refugees. While the United States has been the leader weve fallen short in absorbing refugees. Jordan has absorbed half a million. Lebanon 1 million and turkey 2 million but since the 2011 the United States has taken in roughly 1,500 Syrian Refugees most in the past year. This is simply not acceptable.
Its after a trigger event. We had some of those in the u. S. Boston is a pilot city now when it comes to cv. It is justified. The numbers here are so much smaller than most European Countries so theres not a sense of urngency and add to that the tools Law Enforcement has here is more powerful than most European Countries. At the end of the day the fbi can do its nice sting operations which no european Law Enforcement agency can do and its a very safe space. Now, we can talk about the problems, the ethical problems, the Community Engagement issues that go with that. If you are the fbi, its a very nice tool to have. Its very effective from that point of view. I think a lot of it has to do im acknowledging somebody thats written a lot about this issue which is jerry. The fbi is an organization thats very much based on numbers. On effectiveness. If you run an Fbi Field Office somewhere, you make a good name for yourself, you make a career based on the number of people you prosecute and not
All humility, in order to set the stage, a question that i think was raised and discussed by members of the council and is of course broader concern to all of us including to all citizens around the world. How is it possible to achieve peace in the middle east . 20 years ago, at around the time of the first i asked this question to a friend of mine and who later was the chief justice of the israeli supreme court. Its common maybe just for americans to believe that wars have a beginning and end. Although of course the recent American Experience in afghanistan and iraq would be changing. Can i ask my friend, would there be peace between palestine and israel and my friend answered weve been fighting for 2,000 years, why should it end now . Theres probably a deep truth to that point, though it is not an assuring answer, but i would like to put it, danny put this question to with all respect to Prime Minister netanyahu. And danny im sure will have other questions as well. The, this institut
Through issues. Some issues that propelled them in in the first place. It provides kind of the support that daniel talked about. A family, a community, that kind of support that is not there to say you are horrible because you believe these things. Let me share my experience and how i got beyond that, finding that common ground. Encounteredou ever anyone that was radicalized by what they had read . Normally high functioning, but had consumed a lot of hate literature or is there always Something Else underlying it . Angela every case is different. Some of the information we are finding now is that not every person suffered trauma, abuse, or has Mental Health issues. Some people came from perfectly stable, loving homes. For some reason felt the need to belong in that way. It is different. Some individuals, a small percentage, were raised in an extremist environment, were. Aught violence there were individuals raised in a prejudice household, taught racism as children. Some will grow up a
