Our map shows the winner, Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Aftab Pureval, the best in central and northern neighborhoods. But it doesn t show that Pureval took first or second place (either alone or in a tie) in 187 of 190 city precincts.
He did well in precincts with poor and strong voter turnout, precincts with high numbers of poor voters and high numbers of more well-to-do voters, an Enquirer analysis of the results shows. Pureval ran well in predominantly Black neighborhoods against Ohio state Sen. Cecil Thomas, a former city councilman, by placing a strong second in some and winning in others.
Voters in the city s nonpartisan primary were picking two finalists for mayor who will face off against each other in November. All but independent Najoli are Democrats.
The candidates fanned out across the city Tuesday, braving torrential downpours at times, in an effort to talk to voters.
The men are aiming for the city s top job, which pays $131,000 a year. This election comes in the wake of four council members over the last 14 months being arrested on corruption allegations.
Term limits prevent Mayor John Cranley from running again, and of the council members elected in 2017 only Greg Landsman can run for re-election.

Two former Cincinnati mayors made surprise last minute endorsements ahead of Tuesday s Cincinnati mayoral primary.
Former mayor Mark Mallory told The Enquirer he believes Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Aftab Pureval is the candidate that can bring needed change to City Hall.
Former mayor Charlie Luken told The Enquirer that Councilman David Mann s experience is what the city needs now.
Mallory and Luken know most of the candidates and have been quietly watching which of the two candidates will emerge to battle it out in the general election, but both said the city is at such a critical juncture they felt it was time weigh in.
