The ongoing restoration of the Montgomeryshire canal could bring £5m of extra tourism spend into Powys - and create 125 jobs. A meeting of Welshpool Town Council last night (July 28) was told funding bids of £25m have now been put in for the completion of the project - with the next phase between Llanymynech and Ardleen set to cost £15m alone. During an update issued to the town council saw John Dodwell of Montgomeryshire Canal Partnership told the meeting that significant progress could be made on reconnecting the canal to Welshpool in the next three years. The gap from Llanymynech to Ardleen is about 4 and a half miles, the levelling up fund application is based on the work being done by March 2024, he said.
LONDON, ONT. London’s winter shelter program will continue at two locations, despite neighbourhood concerns about discarded needles. On Tuesday, city council decided to kept the temporary overnight shelter on York Street and the daytime resting space inside the Hamilton Road Senior Centre open until June 30, a two month extension. The extension will provide more time for residents to be connected with permanent housing. “I think we did the best job we could with a situation that required an immediate response,” Councillor Shawn Lewis told his council colleagues. “However, I do believe there have been some learning opportunities.” Frustrated neighbours say since the daytime space opened on Hamilton Road in December, they’ve had to pick up hundreds of discarded needles.

LONDON, ONT. Resolving London’s housing crisis will require neighbourhoods across the city to accept new infill developments of affordable units. On Monday, City Hall’s Planning and Environment Committee (PEC) considered three affordable housing projects that would create a total of 147 units within 3 low-rise apartment buildings. 403 Thompson Road (4 storey, 44 units) 122 Baseline Road (4 storeys, 61 units) 345 Sylvan Street (3 storeys, 42 units) Several residents from the Glen Cairn neighbourhood spoke against the development on Thompson Rd., arguing they already have a disproportionate amount of public housing in their area of the city. Representing some nearby condominium owners, one woman said, “We are not saying every person in affordable housing is a criminal or unsavoury, however, our personal experiences carry a lot of weight as to the correlation between affordable housing and crime.”
