BRANDON, Fla. The tragic scene that unfolded Monday leading to the death of Hillsborough County Sheriff s Office Master Corporal Brian LaVigne wasn t the first that would lead to Travis Garrett, 28, facing charges for alleged acts against a member of law enforcement.
A motion for pretrial detention filed Wednesday details an incident in Georgia in 2017. It says Garrett beat a Camden County deputy with a cane and his fist when the deputy found Garrett walking on a highway.

BRANDON, Fla. â A Florida sheriff s deputy who was just days away from retirement died in the line of duty Monday evening.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said deputies were responding to a call for service from management at the Paddock Club Apartments around 3:42 p.m. Monday.
The caller said the man had been throwing furniture and clothes out of his apartment window and front door. The caller also said this individual has threatened to harm staff in the past. Deputies were not able to make contact with the man and left the area.

BRANDON â An hour before nightfall on what should have been the second-to-last shift of his career, Hillsborough County Sheriffâs Cpl. Brian LaVigne sat in his squad car on the shoulder of Lumsden Road.
LaVigne, 54, had built a reputation over the course of three decades as a deputy others wanted to be around: He was the kind of guy who insisted the members of his units share meals, a former field training officer whose pupils included some of the agencyâs command staff. In October, he updated his Facebook page with a new cover photo: a calendar page with a January date circled. Retirement.

A Florida deputy who was killed while on duty was just one shift away from retirement, his sheriff has said.
Brian LaVigne, 54, died on Monday afternoon after Travis Garrett, 28, rammed a vehicle into his marked police car while trying to flee from other officers, Hillsborough County Sheriff s Office said.
Sheriff Chad Chronister said that LaVigne, who had been on the force for more than 20 years, was just about to retire.
In a statement, Chronister said: Master Corporal Brian LaVigne was a part of the Hillsborough County Sheriff s Office family since 1990, and he was just one shift away from retirement. We will never forget Master Corporal LaVigne for laying down his life in the line of duty or the response of his squad members who did everything they could to ensure that the individual responsible for his death was apprehended.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has announced funeral arrangements and a memorial fund for Master Corporal Brian LaVigne, who was killed Monday and was one shift away from retirement.
