North-east school pupils bloom in garden design competition

North-east school pupils bloom in garden design competition © Shutterstock Youngsters from two Aberdeen schools have shown their budding design skills by winning a nationwide gardening competition. Pupils from Milltimber Primary and Cornhill Primary schools have been selected as winners in the Pocket Garden Design Competition, run by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful. Children from as young as three across Scotland were challenged to design a colourful and sustainable garden that could feature at the Scottish Gardens Show at Scone Palace in late May. Unfortunately the show has been cancelled for another year due to Covid restrictions, but the winning schools are still building and growing their gardens as planned.

Enjoy a flavour of school dinners over the years in the north and north-east

Enjoy a flavour of school dinners over the years in the north and north-east © Supplied Council bosses in Aberdeenshire got their just desserts when plans to scrap custard and ice cream from primary school dinners prompted an angry backlash from parents and pupils. Pupils at Rhynie Primary, near Huntly, have now launched a petition to get the puddings restored to their rightful place on the menu. While William Dibb, 11, and Angus Beverly, 10, wait to see if they end up with happily ever afters, here’s a look at school meals across the north-east and north over the decades from our archives.
