NEWARK Brevet Major Charles Dana Miller carefully planned out in advance the artwork he would add to his old adjutant desk.
All four sides of the 30 by 36 by 12-inch desk were ornately carved with the history of his regiment. On the front of the desk, Miller carved a specially designed monogram for the 76th O.V.I. that was the centerpiece, flanked by tents and the flag. To the left of the monogram is carved, 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 15th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee and to the right, the Generals that had commanded. In an inscription below the monogram, he carved the 17 states that the regiment had marched through with the total miles traveled. He added that they had occupied 52 camps and 648 bivouacs and engaged in 56 battles and skirmishes.
