Guest well, i have been traveling around with my publicist from alfred knopf and giving readings from some of my earlier volumes and memoirs, and i started to explain to the audience before i read something about the genre, something about its history and where i thought my own work fitted in with it. And the audience would always get very interested and ask a lot of questions, and finally, my editor said one day, well, why dont you do a book about this . so i thought it was a wonderful idea and ii had to do a great deal of reading of 19th century memoirs that i hadnt read before in order to do the book, but i had great fun doing it.
