a lot of times what these inmates will do is they ll conceal contraband items in their mattress. so this appears to be some ink from an inmate-manufactured tattoo gun. it s pretty common. they ll hide ink and needles and rigs and stuff like that inside of these mattresses. basically we hit the cell looking for paperwork that may incriminate these guys being participants in this threat against staff. we collected a bunch of paperwork. we re going to take it back to headquarters. and then we re going to go through it with a fine-toothed comb and see what we can come up with, see if these guys are actively involved. to err on the side of caution we ll place them in ad seg and do our investigation. pending the outcome, we ll determine what their program is going to be, whether to place them back on this facility or retain them. it was very successful.

across inmate danny smith who was in possession of a large quantity of canteen items. you know a lot of times inmates will swap canteen items for gambling or strong-arm another inmate in the unit. that s how they pay. they don t have currency. that s their currency, the canteen. five years ago during a prior stay here sal giuliano was convicted of a more serious offense attempting to smuggle drugs into the jail. though he claims he s cleaned up his act, reputations die hard and today his cell is one of the first searched. they said they found drugs in the bathroom downstairs that everyone in the joint has access to every day, but because i clean down there, they wanted to question me about it. i don t know what they were talking about, though. giuliano s cell comes up clean. while the search turns up plenty of minor contraband items no drugs or weapons are found anywhere else in the unit.
we search as much as we can to make sure that they re not storing contraband items like weapons, drugs, money. it was during this cell search we first met inmate tirrell shropshire, serving an eight-year sentence for carjacking. can you tell me from your perspective, what s going on? they shaking us down, they shake us down all the time, try to see if we got illegal things on us that we ain t supposed to have and stuff like that. i call it harassment, though. his cell is thoroughly searched. they still like to hide shanks or homemade knives in their boots a lot of times. they ll come in here and tear the soles up, put stuff in the bottom of them. they got 24 hours to think of where they can put stuff. so, i mean, it s an endless process. so what are you doing? they re not allowed to have anything on the doors or the walls. i m just taking it down. this guy looks like a doctor s waiting room. he s got little magazines on the
