lucky that we got the guy we got. reporter: the vast majority of fatalities actually happen because someone in the household is using drugs. fentanyl is everywhere in the drug market right now. but the second thing is fentanyl is so highly potent that it takes just an exceedingly small amount for a young child to have a fatal poisoning. reporter: you ve always had to think about drugs in a household with a child. yeah, but this is different. reporter: vanessa durantes is the commissioner of the connecticut department of children and families. since 2020, the county counts eight infants or toddlers who died after ingesting or having contact with fentanyl. in february last year, an infant died in salem, connecticut, just one day before a caseworker was scheduled to see the family. a state watchdog criticized the department of children and families as deficient in keeping that infant safe. i stand by the work of our staff at that time, and i recognize that since then, we ve ha
