you know, chris, what i think is fascinating, go and look at how president obama has moved to the center since the november election. how has he done it? by basically saying i m open to other people s ideas. i want to hear other people s ideas, but ultimately we re going to need to make sacrifices for the good of the american people. the danger, i think scott walker has i think he was doing just fine for the first half of this. basically saying look, we ve got to balance the budget. this is the way we have to do it. the danger he faces now, now that the unions have offered compromise, he has to be careful to not come across as an ideologue unwilling to compromise because of his own ideology. the reason people don t like washington and government and politicians is because they think they have no interest in furthering the public good. do you think the president is in dangerous territory right now? i think scott walker is in dangerous territory. the union, to dafd s vid s
i think the question asked newt gingrich about the way he left his wife is something that in political discourse doesn t need to be present. the notion that we re going to attack people for what goes on in their family, outside their public lives, outside the positions they take is something that frankly is bad politics. i rarely raise this flag, but i think there s a distaken from people like limbaugh for the first family. he wouldn t talk about another first family that were white like this. he has a disdain and beck has it, too. they feel happy doing this because they know their followers like it. they re in the business of keeping a radio listenership. they know it doesn t affect their type ditto heads. there was a disdain for george bush and the bush family. who went after laura bush?

it looks like they re doing it, at least in a fine way today. what do you think? can they win this fight if they fight it on principle, not on hurting people? i think that s absolutely right. i think they ve got an easier position to defend here. if democrats can t find $1 they re willing to cut from the government that s not going to play well with the public. everybody thinks there s something that can be cut. some people think it s the f-35 or bombers. other people think it s the corporation for public broadcasting. howard agrees with you, i think. i do. he shook his head. he s with you. howard fineman, thank you, my great man. and friend. jonathan allen as well, thank you. smart guy. up next, did you catch what senator john thune said about president obama when he announced he wasn t running for president? it s one of the rare times when he says, i can t beat you. a rare time when am politician says it s about politics. how strong is the president right now? our strateg
will they break and run, john? all you need on the senate side is about four to pop saying i m not taking that hit. ben nelson, i m running for reelection in nebraska, i m not going to be the guy that held out against any cuts in the federal government. that s right. a huge portion of the 123459 democrats are up for re-election this piem. republicans are hoping to throw the hot potato to harry reid while he has his hands tied for democrats who are going to want to vote for spending cuts. there s no question about it. they re going to want to be able to go home. that s one of the reasons this is different from 1995. the public opinion on spending cuts on deficits is different right now than it was back then. you re with gene robinson on that. he s a liberal columnist. he s on the show all the time. he says he thinks he s not sure that this is a that this is a dunk for the democrats, that the shutdown of the government, if it s about spending cuts, the republicans may be able to
