IRELAND is at arguably its trickiest moment as it begins to ease Covid-19 public health restrictions, a senior Government official has warned.
Liz Canavan, assistant secretary general at the Department of the Taoiseach, said people can afford to be cautiously optimistic but they need to stay vigilant .

She said: We need a bit more time to ensure that those who are most vulnerable are vaccinated and a higher proportion of the broader population is vaccinated. What we re doing is working so we can afford to be cautiously optimistic. We should be able to look forward to further relaxation of restrictions in the coming months but we still have to go easy for the next while.

THE Department of Health has confirmed 420 new cases of Covid-19 and 11 further deaths in Ireland.
Of the deaths reported today, 3 occurred in April, 1 occurred in March, 2 in February and 5 occurred in January or earlier.

The median age of those who died was 88 years and the age range was 77-94 years.
There has now been a total of 4,831 Covid-19 deaths and 242,819 cases in Ireland.
Of today s 420 cases, 218 are men and 197 are women. Some 74 per cent were aged under 45 while the median age was 32.
