force. it s all coming down on emanuel. he s going to try to fight his way out of it. you know the community very well. you re plugged in on a lot of different layers of that community. can the city recover from this past year plus of police shootings and the resulting community unrest, do you think? well, there s been a black eye put on this city, a blot, for several years. we were called the murder capital of america because of the homicide rate. there s still vast tracks in this city of gang and guns and drug warfare that would be just absolutely inconceivable to most of us who live in other parts of the city. so, yes, we have a crisis here. it s a blot on the city. but ironically, you go through the downtown area and the gold coast side and you see waves of tourists. they were here all summer and all fall. we have two cities here. we have a prosperous city with downtown and near north
and almost to a fault at times where it backfired on him. but he was able to keep the community unrest from happening. so it s important to establish trust and, you know try to prevent what we are watching happening. i m sure when you were growing up and your dad and uncle and martin luther king that they would always say and i m quasi quoting your uncle. forgive me if i got it wrong. be provocative but don t provoke. that s very hard in the real-live fiery, smoky, middle of the battle situation. my cousin bernice and i, we talked about all of these things and it s really difficult in the heat of the fire. . but i ll be honest with you, my heart sank when i heard about this recent incident. we don t know what happened. i m not going to rush to judgment. absolutely.
