Undocumented immigrants in Detroit who opt to get the COVID-19 vaccine at the TCF Center, which serves as the city’s main vaccination site, will not be targeted by immigration enforcement according to the Detroit Health Department.
“As of now, there is no sign of this and the site is accessed, controlled and any unusual federal activity would be flagged by the TCF staff,” Detroit Health Department nurse Hannah Ewing said at COVID313, a virtual townhall on Thursday. The event was hosted by the Community Education Commission, a nonprofit organization that partners with the City of Detroit, and 482Forward, a community advocacy organization focused on education.
The program aims to alleviate the burden of the pandemic on working parents, many of whom are in an impossible bind: What do you do if your child’s school is online, you need to work, and you don’t have or can’t afford care for them during the day?
One solution has been to open child care centers to school age children. This fall, after state officials began to offer child care subsidies to online learners ages 5-12, nearly 20,000 children enrolled. This gives children a place to go during the school day and helps support child care centers that have seen their enrollment plummet. But it can take more than a month for the subsidies to reach the child care providers, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Education said.

The new legislative session brings with it substantial turnover for the Michigan House of Representatives, which will have 28 new lawmakers serving their first full terms in office.
Most of the freshman class will fill House seats vacated by members who hit their six-year term limit serving in the state House, although some defeated incumbents or are replacing members who sought other offices last fall.
Speaker-elect Jason Wentworth, R-Clare, and Democratic Leader-elect Donna Lasinski, D-Scio Township, will fill the leadership slots left open by the departures of former Reps. Lee Chatfield and Christine Greig.
