Special credit must go to Mark Searle, president of Feilding Athletics, for helping establish the new club. ♦ This weekend a number of Manawatū athletes are travelling to Taupō to compete in the North Island cross-country championships. The central location is a popular venue for athletes from all points of the North Island to converge and compete, with the added attraction of a recovery session in one of the nearby hot thermal pools adding to the appeal. ♦ The dates for this year’s winter track series have been confirmed, with Masterton hosting the first day’s events on Sunday, July 11. The events are the 100m, a distance option of 1000m, 3000m, 5000m, 1500m, 400m, or a 2x200m relay.
Hannah Cadzow had a successful day, winning the junior girls’ 100m, 200m, 400m and long jump. As expected, one of the country’s leading young athletes, Monique Gorrie, dominated the intermediate grade sprints, winning the 100m, 200m and 400m races, setting a new school record in her heat of the 200m. Her younger sister Brianna finished second in the 100m and 200m. Amber Trow was another to set a school record with her 1.64m clearance in the intermediate high jump. She also won the 80m hurdles. Alice Cook was another to impress, winning the long and triple jump. Janae Laing completed the school’s impressive lineup of talent in the intermediate grade, with big wins in the discus and shot put.
These athletes will now have to focus on the Manawatū and North Island secondary school championships. ♦ The masters athletes were more fortunate because their national championships were last weekend in Inglewood, and only the final day needed to be adjusted to meet Covid-19 regulations. Brayden Grant performed well, winning gold medals in the M35 grade in the 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m events. His winning time in the 400m of 50.16 seconds was a national record. Andrew Matsuoka Webber was second in the 100m, 200m and 400m races. Hayden Robinson won the M40 400m and was third in the 100m and 200m races.
