65 new police officers join the force

Sixty-five new police officers were sworn on Friday, in a ceremony at Ta’ Kandja. The officers, 54 men and 11 women, joined the force after they concluded a four-month training course for recruits, led by the Disciplinary Forces Academy. It included physical and academic training. The event was attended by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri who congratulated the new recruits and encouraged them to continue with their studies. Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà reminded the new officers of the force’s mission - to provide a professional and trusted service to ensure a safe country in partnership with the community. He emphasised the importance of the mission which, he said, had to guide them in their daily operations.

The seven men linked to one woman s death

Tuesday’s arrests have exposed a network of men believed to have ordered, planned, facilitated and executed the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.  At the top of the pyramid sits business tycoon Yorgen Fenech, who stands charged with having ordered the killing of the prominent journalist in October 2017. Fenech, one of the richest men on the island, is a principal investor in the Electrogas power station project and was exposed as the hidden owner of secret offshore company 17 Black, a suspected vehicle for kickbacks to senior politicians.    Caruana Galizia was probing Fenech’s business dealings at the time of her death; however, it is still not excluded that there may have been more than one mastermind behind the assassination.

John Dalli calls Caruana Galizia perverse criminal , after 17 Black image link

Former EU Commissioner John Dalli has described slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia as a “perverse criminal”, as he objected to Times of Malta reproducing an image on her blog linking him to secret company 17 Black.  Dalli said reproduction of the February 2017 blog post was tantamount to “spinning the calumny of the perverse criminal Daphne Caruana Galizia and which she had fabricated without any attempt of any proof”. In a letter to Times of Malta, Dalli, who was forced to step down as EU Commissioner in 2012, took the opportunity to lash out at the public inquiry into the journalist’s death.
