Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered some news that people living close to border have been waiting to hear for the past 16 months.
Last week, Trudeau spoke with provincial and territorial premiers to discuss restrictions imposed last year due to the novel coronavirus. Both Canada and the United States closed the border to non-essential traffic at the beginning of the health care crisis. Trudeau previously said he wouldnât consider reopening until at least 75% of his countryâs population has been fully vaccinated.
But on Monday, the Canada government announced it will allow fully vaccinated Americans and permanent U.S. residents to cross the border beginning Aug. 9. Canada also welcome fully vaccinated individuals from all countries Sept. 7, provided the situation continues to improve.
TORONTO â Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday that Canada could start allowing fully vaccinated Americans into Canada as of mid-August for non-essential travel and should be in a position to welcome fully vaccinated travelers from all countries by early September.
In the early days of the pandemic, the U.S. and Canadian governments closed the more than 5,500-mile border to nonessential traffic. With increasing vaccination rates and dropping infection rates, some were annoyed the two governments hadnât laid out detailed plans to fully reopen the border.
Canada began easing its restrictions earlier this month, allowing fully vaccinated Canadians or permanent legal residents to return to Canada without quarantining. But among the requirements are a negative test for the virus before returning, and another once they get back.
This editorial appeared in the Press-Republican on July 7:
PLATTSBURGH â For months on end, north country officials have been pleading with Canada to consider allowing some cross-border traffic to resume, but they havenât had much success.
Now, with U.S. Sen. Majority Leader Charles Schumer on board, hopefully some progress can be made soon as summer is now well underway.
âFor the last two months, we havenât seen any progress and that is not acceptable,â Schumer said during a visit to Plattsburgh [July 6]. âIt is unacceptable to have no progress when summer is the season, more than any other, where we here in the north country and throughout New York state need the Canadians for our economic livelihood. And they want to come here.â

MOUNTAIN to teachers of every grade level at the end of Teacher Appreciation Week, which ended Friday. Education is essential, and hard to do well. Thank you, teachers, for all you do. We know there are plenty of times when it seems too hard to go on teaching remotely during a pandemic has been especially draining but know that milions of people like us are behind you, appreciating you and cheering you on.

MOUNTAIN to nurses of every kind on Nurses Appreciation Week, which began Thursday and ends Wednesday, May 12 the 201st birthday of Florence Nightingale. None of us should ever take nurses for granted, but now, during a global pandemic, is a time to appreciate them all the more. Nursing is super-hard, but we hope it is also rewarding for nurses to know they are doing good for their fellow humans
