LIBRARY services could be “severely reduced” and an historic building left empty under cost-saving plans, it has been claimed. A consultation over Conwy County Borough Council’s draft Library and Information Strategy 2021-2026 launched this week is inviting people to have their say on changes to libraries. Changes include increasing the use of technology, new services for remote communities and varied library hours, but it is the relocation of Colwyn Bay Library to Coed Pella that has caused uproar. Cllr Malcolm Worth, of Rhiw ward, said: “A lot of people are worried that an historic building will remain empty and go to rack and ruin.
HOW libraries can be used to benefit communities across Conwy over the next five years has gone up for discussion. Conwy County Borough Council has launched a consultation over its Library and Information 2021-2026, which sets out its approach to improving library services. Library users, partner organisations and interested parties are encouraged to get involved and share their views by taking part in the consultation. The draft strategy includes plans for a community hub in the west end of Abergele, relocating Colwyn Bay Library and providing outreach services in rural communities. Over recent years, it has been a council priority to develop libraries into community hubs that provide a wide range of services and activities, including Conwy Culture Centre, more varied library opening hours, mobile library routes and the establishment of five community libraries.
