The Muslim holy month of Ramadan will end next week, on May 12. This is the second time Muslims have observed this month during the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Last time, many mosques closed their doors to ensure the safety of their community.
Muslims spend much of May in devout prayer. Most also fast from sunrise to sunset. For many, it s a very important opportunity to connect with their community.
KUNC reporter Adam Rayes spoke with Shakir Muhammad, president of the Islamic Center of Fort Collins, and Iman Jodeh, spokesperson for the Colorado Muslim Society Masjid Abu Bakr in Denver, to find out how the second COVID Ramadan is going for their mosques.

DENVER â April is Arab American Heritage Month in Colorado.
Itâs a time to recognize Arab American Coloradans who are making a difference in our community.
One of them is state Rep. Iman Jodeh, D-Aurora. She reached out to Gov. Jared Polis to proclaim April as Arab American Heritage Month back in 2019.
In Islam, God revealed the Quran, the holiest book for Muslims, to the prophet Muhammad during Ramadan; the month s start depends on the sighting of the new moon. Fasting lasts from dawn to sunset every day of the month and is broken by iftar. When the month of Ramadan ends, Muslims, numbering nearly two billion worldwide, traditionally celebrate the holiday with multiple days of feasting and gatherings. But that s difficult during a pandemic.
Kolila s mosque and others across Colorado were closed and unable to host worshippers for iftar meals after the daily fasting last year; nor could they welcome Muslims for the nightly prayers and Quranic recitation.

Colorado’s first Muslim lawmaker, freshman Rep. Iman Jodeh of Arapahoe County, on the House floor as the Colorado General Assembly opened its 2021 session on Wednesday, Jan. 13.
State Rep. Iman Jodeh has a clear memory from her childhood of going to the Colorado Capitol building with her father.
“I would watch him on the side of both chambers as he would deliver the opening prayer multiple times over the session,” she recalled in an interview with Colorado Matters.
Witnessing her father proudly display his faith and sense of leadership in the context of the legislature is partly what led her to call the very same building her workplace. In November, Jodeh was elected to represent House District 41, which covers Aurora. In doing so, she became the first Muslim lawmaker in state history.
