A man is in custody after causing an estimated $50,000 worth of damage to windows at the Medicine Hat police station.
According to police, patrol members inside the station heard banging on the windows of the front lobby area at about 6 a.m. Wednesday. When they arrived at the front of the building they located a 30-year-old male with a hammer actively smashing windows.
The male was taken into custody.
The lobby doors as well as the windows of the museum and Community Boardroom were damaged in the incident. As a result, public access will be temporarily restricted.
Inspector Joe West says the suspect is waiting for a bail hearing.

Gymniks Childcare and LaValley Physiotherapy will be open at the Eastlink Centre with access through the west entrance during operating hours. The Collision Reporting Centre is also remaining open; visitors are asked to call ahead for access via the south entrance.
Private restaurants within these facilities will have the opportunity to remain open for take-out in-line with provincial guidelines.
Eastlink Centre and Coca Cola Centre members with active memberships will have their membership frozen and extended. Full details will be emailed to individual users via their online registration accounts.
