Museveni wants reconciliation with Opposition, but how will he do it?

Daily Monitor Sunday February 07 2021 L-R: Opposition leaders Asuman Basalirwa (JEEMA), NUP’s Robert Kyagulanyi, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and former FDC president Kizza Besigye after they formed the United Forces of Change last year. PHOTOS | ALEX ESAGALA | FILE Summary In his acceptance speech on January 16, President Museveni indicated that he would be initiating talks with sections of the Opposition. But NUP, which is set to become the biggest Opposition party in Parliament, has yet to out any terms under which it might engage Mr Museveni. FDC’s position has always been that any dialogue must have a definite agenda and discuss a transition from Museveni/NRM.

Poor turnout: What is keeping     voters away?

Daily Monitor Saturday February 06 2021 People take cover as police fires teargas to disperse a campaign rally in Mukono District on November 30. PHOTO/FILE Advertisement This signifies 59.35 per cent of the registered voters. In discussing the outcome of the elections and trying to explain the voting patterns, Dr Julius Kizza, a lecturer of Political Science at Makerere University, says the patterns appear to have been informed by the level of political awareness. “Rural voters who are predominantly poverty-stricken peasants voted for a presidential monarchy. By contrast, the urban-based voters, who are more politically conscious, predominantly voted the Opposition. They voted for change,” Dr Kizza argues.

A battle for future transition

PHOTO/DAVID LUBOWA Advertisement After being in power for 35 years, President Museveni – at least officially – doesn’t show any sign that he is about to stop. Mr Museveni, who has tweaked his name to add Tibuhaburwa during campaigns, laid out what he claimed was a vision he has for not only East Africa but Africa at large. “NRM came to deal with historical problems of Uganda and Africa. We are not job seekers. They think I am here because I am looking for a job. They are lying [to] themselves,” Mr Museveni said while campaigning in the eastern district of Kumi last November.
