Local students raising funds to create Vietnam Veteran memorial

By Melanie LeCroy Gulf Shores High School students are raising funds for a memorial dedicated to local Vietnam Veterans and they need the community’s help. Advanced Placement History and Advanced Placement Language and Composition students are completing a cross-curricular project focused on the Vietnam War and the Cambodian Genocide. The project includes reading the nonfiction novel “First They Killed My Father,” studying Vietnam, writing essays, hosting guest speakers and planning a cross-curricular design project. The students, moved by their studies, want to honor local Vietnam Veterans with a community art project for the cross-curricular design project. Turtle Tracks has provided a 4-foot-tall fiberglass sea turtle statue the students will design and decorate and a plaque to honor veterans.

Non-subscribers City of Foley votes to sponsor Lemonade Day stand Posted By Jessica Vaughn FOLEY - The City of Foley council voted to approve a $150 “Safe Stand” sponsorship for the upcoming Lemonade Day on Saturday, May 15. With the sponsorship, a participating local student will be able to set up a lemonade stand in a pre-approved spot in Foley to learn about entrepreneurship, running a business, and customer service. The program is open to students K-5. “This program teaches youngsters about creating and running a business,” said Mayor Ralph Hellmich. “It basically teaches the fundamentals of creating and managing a business. The way this works is you can sponsor a child and they can set a stand up in Foley anywhere that’s appropriate or that can be approved, and they’ll have a lemonade stand out there.”
