The damaged entrance pillars at St Peter & Paul’s cemetery in Portlaoise look “dreadful” says a local councillor.
Cllr Noel Tuohy has asked Laois County Council to fix the four pillars.
“These are ten foot tall pillars with unusual capping at the main gate. They are looking dreadful. One is broken, it does look bad. It is the first view of the cemetery. Out of respect we should get this done as soon as we can,” he said.
Cllr Tuohy who is also a member of the cemetery committee tabled a motion to the Portlaoise Municipal District’s April meeting requesting the repairs of the council owned cemetery.

A drop-in centre for people experiencing suicidal thoughts and mental health problems, is being proposed for Laois.
Portlaoise Cllr Noel Tuohy says there is a chance with the SoSad charity to do what they failed to do with Pieta House and have a Laois premises.
He tabled a motion to the April meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, asking Laois County Council to support and help in anyway possible, the opening and operation of a SoSad centre in Portlaoise. We need to grab this with both hands, if the council can provide accommodation. We are a growing town and we have problems. We haven t a place, there is no-where to go for someone feeling depressed. These counsellors will provide a free service. There is fundraising going on here, it should be ringfenced for Laois, it is badly needed. It is important that the council provides funding or better still accommodation, Cllr Tuohy said.

The Control of Dogs Act is being blatantly disregarded in Portlaoise, Cllr Noel Tuohy charged at the Portlaoise Municipal District meeting. A man here in town had his dog mauled to death, the dog s legs were eaten off by another dog, he said. There will be more abandoned dogs after Christmas. People need to have a little bit more consideration, stated the Labour Party county councillor.
Cllr Tuohy s motion asked the Council to remind people that a dog is for life and not just Christmas and also that dogs that required muzzling be muzzled.
