TROWBRIDGE is being recommended to keep its current civic leaders in May for a second term of office. A motion before the full town council meeting on Tuesday will recommend that Mayor Cllr Peter Fuller and his deputy mayor, Cllr Steve Oldrieve, stay in place for another year. The motion has been proposed by Cllr Geoff Whiffen and seconded by Cllr Graham Hill who say the move would provide some continuity after the May local elections. Their motion states: That the council sitting after the elections on May 6 consider that due to the pandemic and restrictions imposed during 2020/2021, and fundraising curtailed, the positions of Mayor and Deputy Mayor are continued for a further year with the current councillors retaining the positions, if re-elected.
Trowbridge swimming pool - could it be replaced with a new leisure centre? Trowbridge council will be urged on Tuesday to write to Wiltshire Council asking it to commit to providing a new multi-million pound swimming pool for the town. Liberal Democrat Cllr Chris Hoar says the county should provide a new pool as part of the long-promised new leisure centre for Trowbridge. The town has been left without a swimming pool since December 24, 2019 when it was suddenly closed because of structural problems. Wiltshire Council announced this week it hopes to reopen the pool on April 12. Trowbridge Amateur Swimming and the West Wiltshire Diving Club were forced to train at other pools in Wiltshire and beyond over the past year, subject to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic lockdown restrictions.

Civic Centre, Trowbridge The Civic Centre in Trowbridge will be offered to the NHS as a coronavirus vaccination venue. An extraordinary meeting of Trowbridge Town Council tonight, councillors agreed to delegate authority to the town clerk in consultation with the council leader to contract out the Civic Centre for use as a vaccination site. The original motion proposed by the leader of the town’s Conservative group, Antonio Piazza and seconded by Cllr Thomas Bazan. Despite many councillors agreeing with the original motion and supporting it on social media, not all were pleased. However, Cllr Geoff Whiffen said “compassion is overruling logic” adding the council did not know how long the Covid crisis would last and asked members if they were “prepared to write an open-ended cheque”.
