Closure could leave Radnorshire with gaps between schools

Llanfihangel Rhydithon Primary School from Google street view Closing Llanfihangel Rhydithon primary school could leave too much of Radnorshire without a school, councillors have been warned. At a meeting on Tuesday, February 9, Powys County Council’s cabinet discussed the future of Llanfihangel Rhydithon primary school in Dolau, between Llandrindod Wells and Knighton. The school is oversubscribed, with 37 pupils and a capacity for 36. A report before the members said closing the school could save £59,000 a year. But adult social care and Welsh language portfolio holder Cllr Myfanwy Alexander (Banwy – Independent), said: : “The thing that’s startled me looking at the map is the distance, that’s an awful lot of Radnorshire without schools in it.

Church could be closed due to small attendances and big maintenance bill

Church could be closed due to small attendances and big maintenance bill ); AN historic church in Nettlebed could be forced to close. St Bartholomew’s has a tiny congregation and no governance and the building needs a huge amount of repairs. The problems were laid bare at a meeting of Nettlebed Parish Council attended by priest-in-charge, Rev Mark Ainsworth, who has been in the job for 18 months. The meeting heard that the St Bartholomew’s congregation averaged just 12 people and that substantial work was needed to the roof and tower of the church within the next two years. The church also did not pay the “parish share” for the five years before 2020. This is the money that each parish is asked to contribute to support the mission and ministry of the church in the Diocese of Oxford.

Having first declared a ‘Climate and Ecological Emergency’ in June 2019, Portland councillors also support Dorset Council’s own declaration, and have contributed comments and observations to Dorset Council s recent strategy consultation.

Leeds set to get new leader as Blake becomes peer

Leeds City Council’s ruling Labour group has selected its current deputy leader James Lewis as its next leader, replacing Judith Blake (Lab) who is stepping down after six years in the top position. Last month it was announced Cllr Blake would accept a life peerage after a nomination by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. Cllr Lewis will become council leader, subject to a vote at a full council meeting, when Cllr Blake steps down to take up her peerage, although it is not yet clear when this will happen. Cllr Blake, who is also chair of the Local Government Association’s children and young people’s board, became Leeds’ first female leader in 2015.
