UPDATE: March 5 â New Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona has accepted the resignation of Mark Brown and appointed Robin Minor, the deputy chief operating officer for partner participation and oversight for FSA, as acting chief operating officer.

President Biden speaks on racial equity before signing executive orders.
For years, researchers and higher education advocates have been frustrated by the lack of good Education Department data on how students of color and those with lower incomes are being let down by the nation’s higher education system.
“It’s hard to solve racial equity problems if you can’t see them,” said Clare McCann, deputy director for federal higher education policy at the progressive think tank New America, and formerly a senior policy adviser at the department during the Obama administration.
However, progressive advocacy groups say an executive order President Biden signed on his first day in office instructing the Education Department and all federal agencies to examine whether they are perpetuating systemic racism could have profound effects on the experience of students from underrepresented groups at colleges and universities.

As with much in higher education, the real activity was online, where the university was busy launching a virtual master s degree in data science and an online program in computer science for people who already have bachelor s degrees. Aimed at consumers needing to find new jobs or preparing for graduate school, the offerings seemed well timed to attract students.

President-elect Joe Biden plans to nominate Miguel Cardona, the head of Connecticut s public schools, to be his secretary of education.
In a statement Tuesday evening, Biden called Cardona a lifelong champion of public education.
Cardona makes true on an early Biden promise to pick an education secretary who was a teacher: A teacher. Promise, Biden told the National Education Association, the nation s largest teachers union, back in July 2019.
