Aspen Getting Its Heat Back, But It's Still Unclear Who Vandalized The Gas System

Courtesy Aspen Police Department A picture of the Earth First! graffiti found at one of the three Black Hills Energy locations that showed evidence of tampering. Heat and hot water are slowly returning to Aspen after purported vandalism cut off gas service to around 3,500 customers over the weekend. The service interruption came as the mountain community faces freezing temperatures and a surge of tourism around the holidays. By the end of the day Tuesday, Black Hills Energy reported the company had restored service to about 2,000 homes and businesses. Carly West, a utility spokesperson, said 170 technicians will continue to light pilot lights and check for toxic gases to fully restore service.

that has kept residents and visitors without heat for the past few days. Acting City Manager Scott Miller issued the declaration on Tuesday at 2:35 p.m., which creates a state of emergency for Aspen. The declaration provides the city manager with the tools necessary to protect public health and safety, including the authority to, among other things, shelter vulnerable populations for multiple days and access properties to protect individuals from injury or damage, according to a news release from the city. The declaration provides the city the ability to activate the response and recovery aspect of applicable local and inter-jurisdictional disaster and emergency plans for aid and assistance, officials said in the release.
