A federal judge has upheld Berkeley’s first-in-the-nation ordinance banning natural gas lines in new buildings, rejecting arguments by restaurant owners that the ban conflicts with federal laws on energy efficiency.
The ordinance, which took effect in 2020, was aimed at reducing emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. It requires new residential and commercial buildings to use entirely electrical lines and infrastructure unless a building cannot be constructed without natural gas piping, or the city grants an exemption in the “public interest.”
