ANSONIA Residents battling a rock crushing facility on Riverside Drive say the city and facility want to change zoning regulations in an attempt to retroactively allow the business to crush rocks.
City officials disagree, saying Burns Construction Inc. is legally running its facility but wants to change the regulations to allow it to move its rock crushing to another part of its property, away from neighbors.
“This is the correct process. We re very happy that Burns stepped forward to do this,” said City Attorney John Marini.

ESCANABA After some discussion, the Escanaba City Council unanimously approved a change to the city’s code of ordinances that will ban hunting within city limits.
The ordinance, which was first presented at the April 22 regular council meeting, aimed to address an ongoing issue with hunting on land within the Westside Recreation Area. Over the years, the number of hunting blinds appearing in the recreation area has increased, suggesting the area has become popular with hunters. However, hunters could only be ticketed for hunting within the city limits if they were actively seen discharging a firearm.
The change approved Thursday expands upon the rules against discharging a firearm by explicitly prohibiting hunting activities. Specifically, the amended ordinance reads, “There shall be no hunting of wild or domestic animals within city limits with any kind of air gun, spring gun, cross bow, or firearm or any dangerous weapon. There shall also be no baitin

ESCANABA A plan to amend the city’s code of ordinances to prohibit hunting in Escanaba was met with questions by the city council, who worried the language of the ordinance could inadvertently allow hunting around Ludington Park.
During Thursday’s regular city council meeting, Escanaba Parks and Recreation Director Kim Peterson presented the ordinance, which would expand the city’s current ordinance prohibiting the discharge of firearms and other hunting weapons, such as crossbows and airguns, to prohibit all hunting, baiting, and blinds within the city limits.
The changes were spurred by an ongoing issue of hunting blinds being put on land within the Westside Recreation Area. Currently, individuals can only be ticketed if they are seen discharging a firearm, but the number of blinds appearing over recent years has the city concerned for public safety.
